Micro Aerosol-based Decontamination System

Battelle Number(s): 15847
Patent(s) Pending
Available for licensing in all fields

Summary

Researchers at PNNL have developed a non-intrusive technology for the quick and effective decontamination of potentially harmful germ cells, viruses, and biological spores in enclosed spaces. Employing a micro aerosol of electrochemically activated solutions (MAEAS) allows for effective decontamination to occur in sophisticated geometric spaces. The MAEAS technology can penetrate tiny, hard to reach spaces where contaminants often go unchecked.

The technology consists of two components: an environmentally friendly, salt-based decontaminant/disinfectant and the method by which the decontaminant is applied to a contaminated environment. It is suitable for application in any enclosed environment such as in hospitals, clinics, food processing facilities, transportation vehicles (air and ground), airports, and other buildings, as well as for exterior disinfection of vehicles and other machinery positioned inside a hangar or other enclosure.

The application of MAEAS for decontamination of enclosed environments allows for unattended cleanup of previously contaminated space with minimal post-cleaning waste generation, reduced manpower, reduced waste management cost, and improved overall decontamination and restoration cost and time.

Advantages

  • able to penetrate porous materials and reach barely accessible spaces—goes where the bugs go
  • simple in design and logistics, offering ease of use, portability, and readily available decontaminant
  • uses a small volume of eco-friendly liquid decontaminant that leaves little to no residue
  • efficiently and effectively decontaminates an enclosed environment in a short timeframe, ranging between 0 and 60 minutes
  • effective against viruses, germ cells, and spores.
